BaseMap Ambassador Richard Peeples helps a buddy harvest his first bull in Montana.
I’ve always heard stories about the famous Montana Missouri River breaks and that it was a game rich environment and a hunters paradise. That is when and if the weather cooperates and that is a big “if.” My original plan was to hunt some private ground we had permission to hunt on and new there were some great bulls to be hunted. The second day we were driving up to scout for elk i glassed up a really good Antelope buck and was able to crawl in on him and his herd of does and made a great shot on him and was able to harvest my biggest Antelope to date and with a bow. Heavy rain made the roads into east Mt “gumbo” and heavy pressure on every fence line and even trespassers had made even turning up elk extremely tough. On the last couple days of the hunt I scoured over BaseMap aerial mapping and found what looked to be an excellent waterhole tucked way back in some public ground and we were going to put all our cards on it. The last day last hour we had a younger bull come in and present my buddy John a shot for his very first elk kill that made it all worth it. Between the nonstop rainstorms which made for the gumbo roads and really limited us on where we could go and how far we could go before we would be stuck the trip was an overall success with John being able to harvest his first ever elk!
