Many of the properties that we hunt tend to have an over-abundance of deer, which means we heavily focus on doe management each year. Depending on the year though, sometimes we don’t get hard into that process until later in the season. However, this can be an extremely effective time as deer are heavily focused on food sources.
We not only harvest does to help keep the herd in better health, but also to help balance the buck to doe ratio. In areas where deer numbers are extremely high, the ratio can sometimes be heavily weighted towards does which creates a less competitive environment for bucks. The more evenly balanced the ratio is, the better hunting we will experience during the rut.
