Mounting the gun well in front of the target on really long crossing targets requiring a lot of lead can be difficult because as the gun is mounted to the shoulder and face the eyes come off the target and the gun stops. The nose must be pointed at the target for the shooter to maintain focus on the target through the shot so for this reason a soft mount to the shoulder only allows for the shooter to maintain focus on the target and at the same time get the gun well ahead of the target.
